Sophie’s 1st Birthday Music Video

Kudos to JV All Events for capturing Sophie’s big day in a 3-minute video. Such great service at an unbeatable price. I will surely get their services again in my future events.

Happy birthday Sophie! ❀️😘

Check out Sophie’s music video below.

What if I..

When people say “I don’t have any regrets in my life”, I don’t believe them. We can’t always have everything that we want, even if you’re the wealthiest or the most powerful, or the smartest, or the prettiest, somehow, there must be something that is missing, or something that you regret, even for once, in your life.

Maybe in this lifetime, this will be my biggest regret. But honestly, with my life right now, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Its just that sometimes, I caught myself thinking, what if really I..

Always be my baby

I can’t get enough of Sophie turning 1 already. Seems just like yesterday when I first held her in my arms. Now she’s very makulit and malikot, always wants to get off the bed, walk or just simply wants to explore things and make a mess. Next thing I know, she’ll be a terrible two! Time flies so fast, but one thing is for certain, no matter how old she gets and big she becomes, she will always be my little baby!

Here’s Sophie’s first 11 months. 😘

Breastfeeding at 1 year

We celebrated Sophie’s first birthday almost 2 weeks ago, and when I think about it, I should also celebrate the next big thing to her birthday. It is also my first year of breastfeeding her! πŸ‘

She is one smart baby, because she knows whats best for her. From birth up to now, she refuses to drink from a bottle (even breastmilk) and formula. Good thing she eats a lot now, but she still needs mommy during her sleeptime, especially at night.

I get teary eyed just thinking about my breastfeeding journey, with just a little support system, I wasn’t sure if I can do it again next time. But thank God for breastmilk, Sophie is one healthy baby! She may not be fat, but she has a lean and strong body. She rarely gets sick. She is also very very smart. Also, it serves as our bonding time, especially when she needs comfort.

I’m not sure for how long I can breastfeed, maybe for as long as she needs me. It maybe a long and difficult journey, but I know it will be worth it in the end. πŸ˜…

Here I am breastfeeding Sophie onboard the Shinkansen. Strike anytime, anywhere. 😊

Sophie’s 1st Birthday

Hands down, I wanted to make this birthday really special and memorable, while keeping it simple. Sophie is our firstborn and I wanted to create memories in photos for her to look back to when she gets older.

The thing is, I do not know a lot of kids, neither does Tabs. We only know a couple or two who will surely attend, so for sure its not gonna be a children’s party. So I just thought, why not do the party in a playground like Active Fun, they have function rooms where adults can eat and chat while Sophie plays and enjoys. And we did exactly just that.

Planning the party is fairly easy. We reserved the Fluffy room 3 months before the birthday. Fluffy can only accommodate up to 50 guests, because we plan to invite only our families and close friends.

Next, I thought of a theme. I considered Hello Kitty but went to have a Minnie Mouse theme instead because of her colors. Red, white and yellow sounds more fun than pink, isn’t it? πŸ˜‰

I then looked for a cake maker that can create the cake and cupcakes I saw in Pinterest, but with an affordable rate. I found Rocio Bautista in Instagram (@cakefromusph), I was not too happy with the outcome of the cake, but for the price I paid (P5,500 top and bottom edible 3-tier) and the cute cupcakes (P50/pc) for giveaways, it was good enough.

Since the favors and lootbags need labeling, I ordered a stamper in Amazon ($21-ish) to just stamp sticker pads and stick to whatever needs labeling. This costs P2,500 here when I asked my embosser maker. It will only be used for this occasion and good thing Amazon has it cheaper.

For the lootbags, I just stashed additional chocolates and toys to the lootbags of Active Fun. For the game prizes, I bought red with white dots paper bags and filled them with chocolates and candies. I also bought 8″ wooden letter standees in Celebrations and diy them with red art paper and white round stickers to go with the Minnie theme. I placed these letters in the dessert section.

For Sophie’s outfit, my wedding gown maker, Jo Rubio, promised to create a birthday gown for Sophie for free, but we used it immediately for her photoshoot. So we just used the Burberry dress we bought for her in Dubai, and changed her to Minnie romper during her play time.

As for the invitation, Sophie’s Ninong Ralph is the best in Photoshop. He did the invitation layout and Tabs just made Facebook invites. Ralph also did the layout for the photobooth and backdrop of the stage.

As for the food, balloons and photobooth, they have to come from Active Fun because if I outsource from others, I need to pay a corkage of P2,000 each. On the day of the party itself, we were also charged for the photo and video corkage, because even though it was waived by Ms. Helen who was handling our account, she resigned days before the party, so we had no choice but to pay.

Ok, the most important supplier for this event is probably the photo and video. It only took me a good few minutes to research, inquire and book JV All Events. I’m not sure who can beat their P7,000 rate for photo and video. The rate was such a steal.

The party turned out to be just the way I wanted it. It was a simple celebration with our family, some friends and about 6 kids: dinner, a bit of games and playtime for Sophie. All were captured on camera by JV.

Happy birthday our little love, Sophie! Cheers to a beautiful life ahead! 😘

Here are some of my favorite shots from the party. 😊

Chin woe

My heart skipped a beat when I learned that Chin couldn’t walk for 2 days now. The maid said Chin was dragging her hind legs when she goes out to pee or poop, and they have to carry her back. I went outside to check on her, (which I seldom do now) and she was just lying on the ground. She responded when I talked to her, but quickly turned her head away. She wasn’t also eating.
I know chows are prone to arthritis, and she maybe suffering from one. She has also skin allergies all over her body, maybe from the heat because they’re just outside 24/7.
I truly feel sorry for her. I hate to think that we neglected her and Ciao since Sophie arrived. But its the truth, and just thinking about losing her saddens me. We have her for almost 5 years now, Ciao for almost 7 years.
I hope its not yet too late to have her cured. Chin is a sweet dog, and I love her still, maybe not the way it was before, but I still do. I hope she feels she’s still loved. πŸ˜₯

Sophie says Ma

At 6 months, she can already say Da. She’s 10 months now, and has been saying Ma the past two days and repeatedly the whole day today. I know its just a syllable, but hearing it gives me so much joy and recognition. Its the little joys of motherhood, I guess. πŸ‘Έ

Wedding Preparations

As of this writing, I will be walking down the aisle in exactly 15 days. Since I hate stressing myself with the preparations, and the fact that I have an infant to care for, most of the suppliers that we have chosen, we picked because we liked them. Not because we had to canvass who’s cheaper because if we do that, it might take us a whole year. The wedding industry has boomed over the years and a lot of suppliers has mushroomed left and right with competitive prices and packages that it’d be so hard to narrow down to just one. So Tabs and I just went with our whims and selected who we like irregardless of their rates. Most were on the higher end though, since we don’t want to compromise the quality and elegance of the wedding. It is a once in a lifetime event, after all.

1. Church – Santuario de San Antonio (Susan 8438830)
— Though we are not Forbes Park residents, we knew this church because we had our Nursing capping here. It is a small and very nice airconditioned church which is open to non-residents and just near our reception.

2. Preparations & Reception – Peninsula Manila (Frances Duque 09175896578)
— Pen was not our first choice. It was Makati Shangri-La. But maybe it wasn’t meant to be in Shang because they couldn’t accommodate us on Sep 9 due to fully booked corporate affairs. We booked The Conservatory in Pen with dinner buffet package for our wedding, since our estimate is only about 150 guests.

3. Photography – Nice Print Photography (6365505 / Rona 09178642377)
— Celebrities love Nice Print and I knew I had to get them for my big day. I didn’t even bother considering other photographers. It was just Nice Print, period. Simple as that. We requested for a good photographer though, and they gave us Stephen Pechon, who mostly works with celebrities.

4. Videography – Threelogy (Bong 09209506558 / 4344428)
— I love Kristine & Oyo’s SDE, and Threelogy just made a mark on me that if I can afford them, I will surely get them. They are composed of three friends who have their own teams in events, unless its a celebrity wedding where they all attend.

5. Coordinator – Bride’s Maids & Co (Gia Bernardo-So 09189273679)
— This one I had to research, and I inquired to several because I really have no idea for a coordinator. I was torn between Getting Married and Bride’s Maids, but BMC is the pioneer in wedding coordinators in Ph. Plus Gia seemed so energetic and so cowboy when we had a sit down and we knew we had to work with her.

6. Florist/Event Stylist – San Ramoune (Ramon Pastor 09189208093)
— It was recommended by the church admin so we chose this for the church flowers. Later on we found out he also does event styling. Since he’s already an old timer in weddings that even Gia recommended him, we also got him for the reception styling.

7. Music (Quartet) – Manila String Machine (Ted 09189066377)
— They were also recommended by Gia and it was a plus that they played at Tessa Prieto’s 20th wedding anniversary.

8. Make Up Artist – Jo Chan Make Up Artistry (09178283898)
— When I started searching for a MUA online, I discovered her and loved her work, saw her booth twice in expos but I didn’t book her. I continued searching for others but I kept thinking about her. Hahaha so yeah, I booked her and slept peacefully knowing that I did.

9. Couturier – Jo Rubio (09175162784 / 09175548399)
— Like any other bride I was hoping for a Veluz, but they couldn’t accommodate me because I inquired 6 months before the wedding. They require at least a year for a custom gown. Jo Rubio is in the top 7 based on my research. His package rate includes the whole entourage with what only a bridal gown from Veluz.

10. Invitations – The Write Impression (Ana Mallari 8674207)
— It has a more reasonable price for letterpress and gold stamping than Printsonalities although I must admit the latter has the better creative designs.

11. Cake – Penk Ching (09178122676)
— It was an inclusion in the Pen package but I was having thoughts of replacing her and going for Bethany instead. She was a busy woman and we even had to go to QC just to meet her. Well, she’s a pioneer in cake making and she seemed to get what I wanted so I’m sticking with her.

12. Entourage Giveaways – Chocolate Confections (Maribeth Santiago 09178519828)
— I first saw this in the first bridal fair that we went to, and like the sucker for chocolates that I am, I was thrilled by the thought of giving chocolates to the entourage. So I finally booked them the second bridal fair around.

13. Guests Favors – CheeCups by Team Johnny (John Malayao 09053461021)
— I really wanted food for a giveaway. Maybe because I find stuff like figurines or little lamps corny and obsolete. The trend now for giveaways are cupcakes and french macarons. So I just search for something like it but not too common. Cheecups are flavored cheesecakes in jars. They are not cheap, but are delicious and the supplier communicates well.

14. Photobooth – Flipbooks (Mark Javier 09178073425) ;
KnJ Photobooth (Kate AΓ±onuevo 09178720818)
— Flipbooks is not exactly a photobooth, its a 7 second video clip that they will turn into small books that you flip to see the action. I think its better than a photobooth. Though we still retain a photobooth by KnJ. We loved their photos from Sophie’s christening last year so we decided to get them as well. So there’ll be two of them that guests can line to.

15. Bridal Car – Rolls Royce (Jeff Lizardo 09175973322)
— Ok, we know this is waay too lavish and fancy for a bridal car, but we had the chance of taking this RR for a spin last Pen’s bridal fair (we had a driver). When else to have this once in a lifetime opportunity to use a Rolls Royce other than our wedding day? Nada, right? So we booked them.

16. Tiffany Chairs – Windsor & Tiffany (Maru De Ocampo 09175315300)
— Pen has silver tiffany chairs but our color motif is nude pink and gold. So we needed gold tiffanys. Windsor is the one who brought Tiffany chairs to Ph so I know they have original tiffanys. Plus they have pink seat cushion which matches our motif.

17. Lights & Sounds – Sound Assembly (Janssen Dimalanta 09178537028)
— This is also included in the package, but we met with the owner because we wanted to be sure for the requirements of the quartet. We also added 2 projectors for the avp and other presentations.

18. Entourage Car – The Luxe Bus (Monica Lu 09176255346)
— My take is that, Tabs doesn’t want to be beaten by my RR, so he booked this bus for him and the entourage. I’m following this on instagram, and in a way I like this because even then I have always wanted to know what it would be like riding in this luxury bus. We booked the Indulgencia, which can seat 24 people, drinks included.

19. Entourage Make Up – Tong Ecat (09062087808 / 09296079118)
— My sister-in-law Roxanne, is friends with her in HSBC. She recently resigned from work to concentrate on being a MUA. Rox was able to haggle her rates for all the entourage, so I was fine with that.

So there. This early I wanted to thank all the suppliers for hopefully giving us the best wedding we could hope for. Tabs and I were already married civilly but of course, its still different to be married in church in front of our family and friends, and now we have Sophie. I have always wanted a simple and elegant wedding and in just the next few days it will finally become a reality. 😊

First Timers in the Land of the Rising Sun

Going to Japan was one of our dreams come true. When news of Japan’s visa lifted came about last year, we were overjoyed and started planning. Sadly, the news wasn’t real at all, as confirmed by the Japanese Embassy. Anyhow, the good news is that, it becomes easier to receive a Japanese visa and they can even provide multiple entries upon approval.

When PAL released their seat sale earlier this year, Tabs and I hurried to book a flight to Narita, business class. It still cost us a little over USD2k, but taking into considerations the 4-hour flight, a baby with us, and our first time in Japan, we decided to splurge instead. Its a seat sale after all, still cheaper than the regular fare.

Flying Business
Flying Business

We booked for June 6-8, and came May, we were still unprepared for the trip, and visa application. We thought of rebooking the flight for September, as our honeymoon after the wedding. But rebooking the tickets will cost us almost USD700 more, and downgrading the tickets to economy is not allowed. And so with less than a month before the flight, we decided to just take it, come what may with the visa. We then prepared the requirements for visa application, and online booking of hotel and tours.

Japan Visa
Japan Visa

We received the visa just 2 days after submitting to Reli Tours. It cost php3,600 for the three of us. Of course we were thrilled upon our approval, imagine, its a Japanese visa! Meaning we have a chance to get a multiple on the next application. And also, our stepping stone to the US and Europe. (A third-world thinking like us 😝)

Tokyo’s weather when we arrived was 20 degrees with rain showers. 20 was ideal, but the rain, well, it isn’t much when you’re travelling.

at the Narita International AirportΒ

It took us almost 2 hours from Narita Airport to Marriott Courtyard Ginza via Airport Limousine. We chose Courtyard because the airport bus and tour bus stops here, and also near a subway station, so its very convenient for our airport transfer and tours. The first day is a free day since we arrived at the airport at past 12 noon already. I noticed that Narita Airport is already an old airport. I’m not so sure with Terminal 1 but I think Terminal 2 needs a renovation to be at par with other airports like Hongkong or Incheon. We collected the wifi router Tabs rented as we were waiting for the next bus shedule at 145PM. Its already raining when we landed, and the rain didn’t stop throughout the day.

After checking in at the Courtyard and resting for a while, we took the subway and went to see the Tokyo Skytree Tower. Because it was raining, we could only see fog from up the tower, and only the tiniest bit of sight of the buildings. After buying our souvenirs we went down for dinner. We looked for a resto that has an English menu, and we settled at Kitchen Jo’s, sort of like Western Japanese. The nice thing about it was, when we asked for a high chair for Sophie, they included a kiddie plate with utensils and a cup with straw. Its so cute. The only thing we noticed about their high chairs everywhere here, its just literally a small high chair, no seatbelt whatsoever.

Sophie's utensils

Access to the Skytree is in the 4th floor of a mall, so after viewing and dinner we walked around inside for a while. There was a Hello Kitty store and bought some stuffed toys for Sophie. I also noticed some stores selling beautiful fans and umbrellas. Too bad we didn’t have the energy to go around anymore, we were tired from all the walking and we still had to take the subway back to the hotel.

Now came the challenging part on our return to Courtyard. When we went up from the subway it was raining hard. As in think of a storm or typhoon with lots and lots of rain. Good thing we bought big clear umbrellas from Family Mart, they protected our upper bodies, including Sophie. But the rest, especially our shoes, were dripping wet. We looked like poor soaked creatures upon our entry to the hotel. And it got me thinking of the last time I got soaked in the rain, which was, forgettably, a long time ago.
The shoes didn’t dry the next day, and we had no choice but to wear them for our tour today. We booked online with Sunshine Tours a Mt. Fuji tour for today and a city tour tomorrow. The transfer bus, which stops in front of the Courtyard, promptly leaves at 815AM. Japanese are very prompt people. So when the schedule is 815, it doesn’t mean you have to be there by 815. You have to be there by 810 or 812 because it will leave by 815 on the dot, whether you arrive or not.

Fifth Level of the Mt. Fuji
First Level of the Mt. Fuji

The transfer bus with transfer guide only drops the tourists to Hamamatsucho Terminal, the main terminal of Sunshine Tour buses, where you will stand in line to the corresponding type of tour you purchased, and will be given tickets to board the bus. It can get really crazy here, because they have so many types of tours and so many tourists standing in line, or waiting to board, all in one place.
We purchased the Mt. Fuji and Hakone tour with lunch, but due to the bad weather (yes, still raining), the bus was only allowed to the first level of the mountain. We got down to take pictures, which didn’t look like we’re from a mountain at all. It looked just like a stopover surrounded with trees, and the rain.
Plus, Hakone tour was also cancelled. The tour guide said a road was blocked also due to the weather. Still, he found ways to make up for the lost Hakone tour. We went boating and rode the cable car. Both were so boring that I fell asleep inside the boat, seriously.

Our return to Tokyo was via Shinkansen or bullet train. We wanted to see how fast it can get. The train was fast enough at 300 km/hour, but nothing really beats the MagLev in Shanghai that goes up to 500 km/hour. Kinda scary, really.
The Shinkansen stops at the Tokyo Station, and from there we went by subway going back to Ginza. We looked for a place to have dinner, and we ended up at Yoshinoya. Funny how this was our first time eating in a Yoshinoya. There were so many in Manila we thought its local, but in Japan, they’re everywhere.

After dinner we walked around Ginza for a while, bought some stuff at the Apple store, and baby clothes at Uniqlo.

Our last day tour is called Tokyo Morning city tour. We checked out early because the tour will end by 1220PM at the Tokyo Station. Theres still a bit of rain, but unlike the past 2 days, the weather today has got better. Our first stop was the Tokyo Tower. Since it was shorter than Skytree, we were able to have a better view of the city. Tabs also said that since the opening of Skytree, Tokyo Tower has had decreased visitors. Maybe thats why they partnered with the tours.

Next stop is the Imperial Palace. Or just its garden, because tourists are not allowed inside of course. The garden was lined with hundreds of perfectly trimmed beautiful pine trees. Today’s guide was a nice lady with a good English who shared detailed informations about the city and the Japanese monarchy. She even took a family picture of us in the Armory Storage Building.

Behind is the Armory Storage at the Imperial Palace

The next and last stop was the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. For 100 yen, we tried the fortune telling here, where theres a wooden box with sticks inside that you have to shake. After shaking you get one stick from the hole and compare the Japanese characters written on it to the many different characters placed on little drawers on a cabinet. The only answer you can get is a good or bad fortune. As expected, I got the bad fortune and Tabs, the good fortune. Since I got the bad one, I had to tie the paper to the bad fortune rack, so that the bad luck leaves there. The guide said not to take the game seriously though, as only 30% of it contains the good fortune.

We walked around the Nakamise Shopping Market (also in Asakusa) and tried some street foods there, like buns with different flavors, and ice cream sandwich.
Asakusa was the last part of the morning tour, and we were dropped at the Tokyo Station again. We went back again by subway and did some last minute walking in Ginza. I bought several stuff in Sanrio World in Nishi Department Store.

If only we had lots of time, Tabs would really love to go to Sony in Ginza and Akihabara, and I would have loved to see Hachiko in Shibuya. At least there are things to look forward to next time. After our lunch at Denny’s just across Courtyard, we collected our luggages and took the airport limousine back to the airport. It took only an hour since there were no stops this time. I did some last minute shopping for souvenirs, I just had to buy Kit Kat, Royce and Shiseido, which I was amazed because its so cheap here. We had snack at the beautiful lounge of American Airlines and finally boarded the plane back to Manila.

Bye Japan! See you again!
Bye Japan! See you again!

On our next visit, maybe we can plan on going to Osaka. They say Osaka has lots of beautiful places, ideal for tourists. I don’t know, was it just me, or I just couldn’t seem to find anything special in Tokyo? I mean, the city was nice, though we’ve been to Ginza area only most of the time. I mean, given that it is Japan, I expected to find something unusual, or maybe something I haven’t seen in the countries I’ve been to. Or maybe I expected too much? What I never expected was, most of the people we encountered, I mean the servers in restaurants or the guards in the subway, can speak English. So we never really experienced any language barrier of sort. Also, I expected the cost of living to be really high. But its just something like Korea, and unlike Singapore which was too unreasonably expensive. Also, I liked that the tours didn’t stop at tourists trap shops which I totally dislike in other countries.
I think 3 days is too short to explore Tokyo. Given the chance to return, I think 5 or 7 days would be enough. And I have to make sure it won’t be a rainy season. It was a short, bittersweet experience. Sayonara Japan! Until we meet again.
